The origins of the Challenge Coin are unclear. They may have begun with ancient Roman warriors but soldiers around the world still create and trade them today. The coin’s meaning is to show solidarity among members of organizations and to bring good luck to its owners.
After 30 years, the final Joel A. Mask Golf Classic is making available its own Challenge Coin. Joel was introduced to the coin’s meaning while serving 24 years in the Alabama National Guard. He was deployed to Saudi Arabia in 1990 during the Gulf War with Iraq and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in a combat zone. Joel returned home in 1991 and later retired as Sergeant First Class.
Known as “Joel A.” to his friends, Mask was a longtime member of AAF Tuscaloosa. Over the years he served as President and on the Board of Directors. His awards from the club include Ad Person of the Year, Silver Medal Award, the Bolton-MacVicar[1]Malone Award and was inducted into the Bruce Roche Hall of Fame in 2022.
About the Tournament
The Joel A. Mask Golf Classic has been supporting scholarships to The University of Alabama since its inception 30 years ago. The scholarships are funded by the Tuscaloosa Chapter of the American Advertising Federation, AAF Tuscaloosa, founded in 1968. Joel recently retired after more than 38 years as the Associate Director of The University of Alabama’s Office of Student Media. He is a longtime member of AAF Tuscaloosa and served as President and on the Board of Directors. His awards from the club include Ad Person of the Year, the Silver Medal Award, the Bolton-MacVicar-Malone Award and was inducted into the Bruce Roche Hall of Fame in 2022.
This year's goal is to fully endow the Betty Heard Memorial Scholarship. Other scholarships AAF Tuscaloosa support are the Ricky Yanaura Memorial Scholarship, the Ronnie Quarles Memorial Scholarship and the Dr. Bruce Roche Scholarship, all former members of AAF Tuscaloosa. These scholarships are for Advertising majors and students in the College of Communication & Information Sciences.
